Reality: Babies are born with a natural dive reflex (the “gag reflex”), which prevents them from inhaling water at birth. They don’t start breathing until they come into contact with air! 💨

☁️Water Birth Increases Infection Risk

Reality: The risk of infection is not higher in water births compared to land births, as long as proper hygiene protocols are followed. 🦠

☁️The Water Will Be Contaminated with Stool

Reality: While some stool may be passed during labor, midwives, doulas or healthcare providers are prepared to remove it immediately, maintaining a clean environment. 💩

☁️Pain Relief Is Not Effective in Water Birth

Reality: Warm water can actually help reduce pain by relaxing muscles, decreasing stress hormones, and increasing endorphin production. 💦

“The Birth Pools by Grace birth pool was such a great addition to my birth environment for my home birth!

Setting it up with the twinkle lights was a nice way to distract myself in early labour. It was sooo pretty and the room was very calming with just the soft glow of the twinkle lights in the white pool. It was quick to inflate, the liner fit perfectly, and the sides were strong enough to support me as I rested on them during contractions.

I had a long active labour/pushing stage so being in the warm water was super helpful to cope with the pain. Would 100% use Birth Pools by Grace again!”

💧Stages of Labor: Some people choose to labor in the pool but deliver outside of it, while others remain in the water for the entire process.

👀 Supervision: A qualified midwife or healthcare professional monitors the birthing person and baby to ensure safety.

♥️Baby’s Arrival: After birth, the baby is brought to the surface and placed on the parent’s chest. Babies born underwater typically transition to breathing air naturally as they are lifted out of the water.

OKAY - I want a pool but …… 👀

How long does it take to set up and WHEN do I do it?
For our pros, less than 15 minutes! 👏🏼

Our instruction booklet gives you a simple step-by-step guide to follow.

BUT, on average …

💫 6-8 minutes to inflate the pool.
💫 3 minutes to set up/put away equipment, floor protection, and twinkle lights.
💫 2 minutes to insert and adjust the liner.
💫 5-25 minutes to fill up the pool, depending on your water pressure and hot water tank system.

Tip: Set up the pool in early labour, but WAIT to fill the pool until you are in active labour (6+ cm dilated if you’re having cervical checks).

If you’re not getting in the pool ASAP, fill the bottom half with hot(ish) water and then fill the remaining with lukewarm water when you’re ready to get in.

The temperature once you are in the pool should be 37 degrees celsius and can be measured with the thermometer included in your kit 😊

Our pools are oval in shape and have an internal basin measurement of 38 inches wide x 47 inches long x 24 inches deep. The footprint when fully inflated measures 65 inches long x 55 inches wide x 26 inches high.

So yes, in most cases, our pools are comfortable enough for you and your birth partner to get into or gives the birther ALL the room they need to move freely and ride the waves of labour 🌊

I love that you’re interested in what started this for us - I am a forward-thinking, pattern-breaking, entrepreneurial-minded mama who is building the best life possible for my little family.

I moved to Edmonton with my lovely partner, Curtis, just before the pandemic hit. Like so many couples, I ended up pregnant with our boy.

In 2021, I birthed him unmedicated with a doula and OB support at the Sturgeon Hospital in St. Albert, and loved my experience.

However, it showed me how big the gap in care is for today’s modern mothers 👀

I completed my doula training in November 2021 and was registered and certified with Doulas of North America (DONA) International by May 2022.

I have proudly supported over 50 births including planned cesareans, at-home babies, birthing centre deliveries, hospital births, epidural births, and everything in between!
